Rule of thumb: diameter (in) × RPM between 6,000 and 9,000. Always start slow, stand out of the firing line on startup, and let the lathe reach speed before presenting a tool.

How this calculator works

The woodturning rule of thumb says the product of blank diameter (in inches) and spindle speed should land between 6,000 and 9,000:

RPM ≈ 6,000–9,000 ÷ diameter

Use the low end while roughing an unbalanced blank and creep upward as the work trues up; finishing cuts like the high end, where a higher surface speed leaves a cleaner shear. This tool picks a target inside the window for each stage — 6,000 for roughing, 7,500 for general shaping, 9,000 for finishing — and halves everything when you flag the blank as out of balance.

The number that actually matters is rim speed — how fast the outside edge moves. A 10″ blank at 750 RPM has a rim moving around 22 mph. Doubling the diameter doubles rim speed at the same RPM, which is why big bowl blanks start slow and small spindles can run flat out.

Safety, briefly and seriously

  • Start slow, always. Mount the blank, set the lowest speed, then increase gradually.
  • Stand aside on startup — out of the “firing line” of the blank’s rotation.
  • Check your speed before starting a lathe someone else used last — it may be set for a 2″ pen blank, not your 14″ platter.
  • These numbers are a starting point, not a permission slip: your lathe’s manual and your own judgment come first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does blank diameter decide lathe speed?

Because what matters is rim speed, not RPM. The outside edge of a 12″ bowl blank travels four times farther per revolution than a 3″ spindle — at the same RPM it carries far more energy. The diameter × RPM rule keeps rim speed in a safe, workable window regardless of blank size.

What speed should I use for an out-of-balance blank?

Half the normal recommendation or less — and always start at your lathe’s lowest speed. A freshly mounted, out-of-round blank shakes the lathe until it’s trued up; excessive speed at this stage is the classic cause of blanks leaving the lathe. Speed up only after it runs smooth.

Is there a maximum safe lathe speed?

The practical ceiling is your lathe’s top speed — commonly around 3,000–3,800 RPM on modern machines. For small spindle work the formula may suggest more than your lathe can do; that’s fine, run at maximum. The rule matters most in the other direction: big blanks need slow speeds.

What speed for sanding on the lathe?

Slow — roughly 600–1,000 RPM regardless of diameter. High speed while sanding mostly generates heat, which glazes abrasive, burns fingers, and can heat-check dense woods. Many turners also sand the last grits with the lathe off, with the grain.
