Bandsaw Blade Length Calculator

Lost the manual? Two wheel measurements and a center distance give you the blade length your saw takes.

Formula: 2 × 16.0 + π × (14.0 + 14.0) ÷ 2. Measure the center distance with the tension adjuster at its mid position so the tensioner can take up the difference from a stock blade size.

Order the nearest stock blade length — the tensioner absorbs an inch or so either way. Your saw’s manual trumps the math if they disagree.

The formula

A blade wraps half of each wheel plus the two straight runs between them:

Length = 2 × C + π × (D₁ + D₂) ÷ 2

where C is the distance between wheel centers and D₁, D₂ are the wheel diameters. On the common case where both wheels match, it collapses to 2C + πD — a 14″ saw with 16″ between centers wants a blade right around 76″, which is why so many 14″ saws run 93½″ blades with risers or ~72–80″ without, depending on frame.

Measure once, buy for years

Do the measurement with the tensioner at mid-travel, write the resulting length on the saw with a paint pen, and every future blade order becomes a thirty-second job. Blade length is fixed by the saw; width, tooth pitch, and steel are where the real choices live.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the wheel center distance?

Set the tension/tracking adjuster to the middle of its travel, then measure from the center of the upper wheel axle to the center of the lower one. Measuring at mid-travel leaves the tensioner room to tighten a slightly-short stock blade or accommodate a slightly-long one.

My calculated length isn’t a size anyone sells. What do I order?

Order the nearest stock length — tensioners typically absorb ±1″ or more. If you’re between sizes, most sharpening shops and suppliers will also weld a blade to your exact length for a small premium.

Does blade width change the length I need?

No — length is set by the wheel geometry alone. Width changes what the blade can do: narrow blades (1/8″–1/4″) track tight curves, wide blades (1/2″+) resaw straighter. Buy several widths in your saw’s one length.

What if my saw has three wheels?

The two-wheel formula doesn’t apply. For three-wheel saws, check the manual, or wrap a tape (or string) around the wheels along the blade path with the tensioner at mid-travel and measure directly.
