The formula, shown
Weight = volume (ft³) × density (lb/ft³), with volume = T/12 × W/12 × L. Worked example: a red-oak board 1″ × 6″ × 8 ft is exactly 1/3 ft³, and 1/3 × 44 = 14.7 lb. Handy cross-check: that board is 4.0 board feet, and red oak runs ~3.7 lb/BF — 4 × 3.7 ≈ 14.7. ✓
Where the number matters
- Shipping quotes: carriers bill dimensional or actual weight, whichever is higher — know both before you list that slab.
- Wall shelving: the shelf’s own weight counts toward its load; a 2″ slab shelf can weigh more than the books.
- Racking: a 200 BF hardwood haul is 700+ lb — check the trailer and the lumber rack, not just the wallet.
- Workholding: heavy species change how you clamp, carry, and flatten. Nobody flips a 100 lb top casually.

How much does a board foot of wood weigh?
One board foot is 1/12 ft³, so divide the species density by 12: red oak (44 lb/ft³) runs about 3.7 lb per board foot; eastern white pine (25 lb/ft³) about 2.1 lb; ipe (69 lb/ft³) a hefty 5.8 lb.
How heavy is a typical hardwood tabletop?
A 1-3/4″ × 30″ × 6 ft hard-maple top is about 96 lb — a two-person carry. The same top in cherry drops to ~77 lb; in ipe it would be over 150 lb. Weight scales linearly with every dimension, so a 2″ top is 14% heavier than a 1-3/4″ one.
Does moisture change the weight much?
Enormously. These densities assume kiln-dried stock at 12% moisture content. Freshly sawn green lumber carries so much water it typically weighs 1.5–2× more — a green red-oak 2×8×8 can top 60 lb. If you’re hauling green slabs, budget double.
Why does my board weigh more than the calculator says?
Species averages hide real spread: growth rate, mineral content, and moisture push individual boards ±10% or more. Dense figured stock and wet stock run heavier. Treat the number as a planning estimate for shipping, racking, and carrying — not a scale.
